Adenan: Hudud will not be enforced in Sarawak – BorneoPost ...

Posted: 15 May 2014 12:42 PM PDT

CHIEF Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem yesterday reaffirmed that hudud law would not be enforced in the state.

As such, he urged the opposition to stop harping on the issue.

Adenan also said the state government would not allow the confiscation of Bibles in Sarawak.

"I want to make it clear here in the august House that hudud law will not be implemented in Sarawak and that no Bibles will be confiscated in Sarawak," he said in his winding-up speech yesterday.

He also said the state government assured that it would continue to safeguard all the constitutional rights of Sarawak and the provisions in the Federal Constitution to protect the special interests of the state.

"Rest assured that any proposal to alter or remove any of these constitutional safeguards would be brought by the state government to the attention of this House for deliberation and its endorsement would be sought," Adenan said.

It was at this point that state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen rose up to support Adenan assurance.

"I stand with the Chief Minister that hudud law will not be implemented in the state," Chong said.

The Kota Sentosa assemblyman then urged the chief minister "to advise your colleagues" in Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) to stop harping and 'demonising' them on hudud law.

To this, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh (BN-Bawang Assan) stood up and told Chong to make their stand with their partners in Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

Adenan then continued with his winding-up speech, and took a swipe at DAP and PKR representatives in the House to prove their support to the state's stand on the two issues by quitting from the opposition pact, Pakatan Rakyat, which also involved PAS.

SLTA sending junior players in national championships ...

Posted: 15 May 2014 10:37 AM PDT

KUCHING: The Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) will be sending junior players to compete in two national tennis tournaments at the National Tennis Complex at Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur this month.

They are the Milo Sportexcel National Circuit U14 Leg 3 from May 17-21 and the LTAM Tennis 10's National Championship from May 24-27.

Representing Sarawak in the first event are Kuching's Mark Leong who is national LTAM U14 ranked No. 23, Muhammad Aiman Hamdan (national LTAM U14 No. 42), Mitchell Brapui and Jimmy Liong of Bintulu (national LTAM U14 No. 51) for the boys team and Tan Xin Lin of Kuching for the girls U14 competition.

The above players, who were selected from the Sarawak Qualifying Round from May 10-11 at SLTA Centre, will be accompanied by team official Hamdan Mos.

Meanwhile, SLTA Centre will also host the state's qualifying round this weekend for the LTAM Tennis 10's National Championship.

Tournament director Steve Din said Bintulu will be sending four boys and four girls to the qualifying round while from Kuching two boys and a girl have confirmed their participation.

"Hopefully, we can get more players from Kuching and Miri as well as Sibu to participate and those interested can still sign up today because the closing date is today," he said.

According to Steve, the response to the two qualifying rounds was not too encouraging because most of the players were unable to participate due to the school exams.

"SLTA need to do the qualifying rounds in order to send players for the National Circuit for U14 and the LTAM Tennis 10's National Championship," added Steve.

Players selected from the Sarawak qualifying rounds will be given financial assistance by the National Sports Council under the High Performance Sports Unit Sarawak after it receives the confirmed name list from SLTA.

Financial assistance given to selected players are meals allowances, flight tickets, accommodation and entry fees.

Who will win the World Cup? - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 11:11 AM PDT

Local football fans are bracing themselves in the final countdown to the month-long World Cup which will kick off in the early hours of Friday.

Among the hotly debated questions are: Can host Brazil win the coveted cup for the sixth time in the tournament's history? Can European powerhouses such as Spain and Germany take the cup for the first time on South American soil?

The Borneo Post asked some personalities of Sarawak's football fraternity for their views. Here are some of the responses.

Brazil seems to emerge as their hot favourite.

"There is no way Brazil could not be favourites to win the World Cup on their home soil. I have to say, they are my pick to win this year," said Sarawak head coach Robert Alberts.

Sarawak's Super League flanker S Chanturu too believes that it will finally be Brazil's year.

It is quite simple to him – Brazil have an abundance of talent and firepower at their disposal to see off all challengers.

Former Sarawak defender and presently Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) acting director Lucas Kalang Laeng also picked Brazil but he felt Argentina should be rated highly this year.

"Past record shows that World Cups held in South America will likely be won by teams from the continent.

"So if it's not Brazil, I think it could be Argentina for me," he said.

Of course, there are alternative views.

Sarawak midfielder Shahrol Saperi tips defending champions Spain to break the South American stranglehold on the World Cup when the tournament is played in that continent.

He argues that things have changed in football and one should not believe in cliches.

He believes it all boils down to the way a team plays eventually.

Shahrol's argument has some support from former Croc and ex-Sarawak head coach Pengiran Bala who is now with the Sarawak Football Development Programme (SFDP).

"I know everybody is rooting for Brazil and who could deny it as they are hosts this year but Spain have shown that they are also the modern day football greats.

"I simply could not rule Spain out of the competition," he commented.

But all fans can agree that the right answer will only be known at around 5am on July 14.
