CM to Sarawakians: Be proud, we’re a model of peace and harmony

Posted: 16 Aug 2014 12:05 PM PDT

LUNDU: Scenes of people from various races socialising, eating, and drinking together are ubiquitous in the state.

In fact, when they get together, there's always bound to be smiles and laughter all around because there are no threats to worry about.

Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem said this is what Sarawak is all about, the 'proud Land of the Hornbill', and everyone should do their bit to preserve this unique feature so that the state could become a model of peace and harmony for others to emulate.

The chief minister said things were a bit different in the peninsula.

"In West Malaysia, there are  only three major races and a few indigenous people, but they never stop bickering. It is stupid.

"Here we have 35 races and yet we are very peaceful and live in unity and harmony," he said at a Hari Raya gathering at Lundu Sport Complex yesterday.

Adenan said everyone should be thankful they could live in peace and harmony. They only have to look at the gruesome conflicts in the Middle East and in Africa to know what disunity and wars could bring.

"If we read the news or watch television, the Arabs, the Palestinians, and the Africans never stop killing each other. It is very bad."

Touching on development, Adenan said his administration would continue to develop all corners of the state, including Lundu district.

Meanwhile, Lundu District Officer Hamsien Atar said it was important for everyone, young and old, to respect each other and be forgiving in order to uphold unity.

During the gathering, Adenan's wife Puan Sri Dato Jamilah Anu was presented with a birthday cake.

Present were Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Datin Feona Junaidi, Assistant Minister of Industrial Development Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie and his wife Datin Rose Sanden, and acting Kuching Resident Zamahari Saidi.

MIRI: Five wooden houses were razed by fire, leaving 16 people (three of them Indonesians) at a squatter area in Kampung Muhibbah, Kuala Baram, homeless in the wee hours yesterday.

The fire was believed to have started around 3am.

According to one of the victims, Dennis Wan, 39, he and his wife and their seven year-old son were asleep at that time.

"I suddenly woke up when I heard loud quarrelling voices of a couple next door, it seems that they were fighting… there were sounds of things falling as if they were hurling things at each other", Wan said.

Worried that they might hurt each other, he got up and went out to check.

"I was shocked to see that flames and thick plumes of smoke were coming out from the house of the couple who were quarrelling earlier," explained Wan.

Upon seeing the intense fire engulfing the house, Wan immediately rushed back to his house and woke up his wife and son.

"Other people in the surrounding area were also shouting 'fire!…fire!'" said Wan.

"We could not salvage any valuable items as the fire had spread swiftly", Wan continued when met by thesundaypost at the  scene yesterday.

According to sources, the couple that was quarrelling earlier had escaped when the fire started to engulf the house and spread to other nearby houses.

It was believed that during the quarrel, while hurling things towards each other, one of the things being hurled might have been an oil lamp.

Two fire engines from the Fire and Rescue Department here rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call on the incident around 4.20am.

No fatalities were reported in the incident.

The Fire and Rescue Department is still conducting a probe on the incident.

Sarawak's newest party eyeing 23 branches, pledges to serve everybody without discrimination

KUCHING: Newly-formed United People's Party (UPP) will apply to the Registrar of Societies to set up 23 branches in the state, including several in Kuching, Sibu and Miri.

Its pro tem chairman, Desmond Cheng, said once the ROS approved the application, applications for membership would be submitted to the relevant branches.

"In areas where there are no branches, the applicants will be assigned to a branch nearest to their place of residence or work, unless they have specifically indicated the branch they wished to join.

"After the branches are formed, they will conduct their own general meetings to elect the branch committees and pick delegates to the Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC)," said Cheng at the launching of UPP at Crown Towers here yesterday.

It is understood the TDC might be held in about three months' time.

Cheng said there would be five branches in Kuching, namely Padungan, Batu Lintang, Pending, Batu Kawa, and Kota Sentosa; and four each in Sibu (Bawang Assan, Pelawan, Dudong, and Bukit Assek) and Miri (Piasau, Senadin, Pujut, and Bekenu).

The remaining 10 branches are in Bengoh, Engkilili, Opar, Meradong, Sarikei, Kanowit, Bintulu, Marudi, Limbang, and Lawas.

Cheng said the pro tem committee had designated a pioneer committee to oversee the formation of these branches, their general meetings, elections, and preparations for the TDC. It is also entrusted to oversee the setting up of the party's secretariat.

The chairman-designate of the pioneer committee is Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who is also Minister of Local Government and Community Development. The committee members are Datuk Dr Jerip Susil (Assistant Minister for Public Health), Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa (Engkilili assemblyman), Ranum Mina (Opar assemblyman), and George Lo (a lawyer).

On another matter, Cheng said UPP "is not a breakaway faction of SUPP".

"The pioneer committee may consist mostly of ex-SUPP elected representatives, but, in the strictest sense, UPP is a political party for all those across the state of Sarawak who have an interest in politics to serve the people of Sarawak, including, but not necessarily, those who were SUPP members."

He said the pro tem committee would ensure the new party "is an open and democratic one that allows everybody to have a say in how the party can serve everyone and not just the interest of a few."

He added this would be the best way to unite the community.

Cheng said his committee had also delegated to the pioneer committee to woo a wider spectrum of people to join the party.

"The pro tem committee will make sure that the pioneer committee will do its job well and in accordance to the aspirations of the party."

Cheng said UPP was a multi-racial party with the Chinese community as its base. It aims to serve the people well and to help advance the state through the consolidation of Chinese political power.

"UPP needs the participation of enthusiastic members and also the supporters of Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh. We also welcome Dato Sri Wong and believe in his wisdom. UPP will grow from strength to strength."

Cheng said UPP hoped the elite and essence of the Chinese community would join UPP to help unite and bring the community to the political mainstream once again.

"UPP is a party with a new look, and it wishes to reaffirm its determination to embrace the new and discard the old. Let's unite to pave the way for a new and visionary way for the Chinese community and give positive energy to state politics."

Clerk loses RM348,000 to Facebook ‘lover’

Posted: 16 Aug 2014 11:54 AM PDT

MIRI: A 52-year-old female clerk is now RM348,000 poorer after being scammed by a Facebook 'friend', who goes by the name 'David Alexander'.

She made a total of 13 bank transactions to 'David', who is purportedly from the United Kingdom, after becoming acquainted with him sometime in January this year.

Miri police chief ACP Gan Tian Kee, who yesterday confirmed that the clerk lodged a police report on Friday at Lutong police station, said, "The 13 bank transactions she made totalled RM348,000."

Gan added that during their 'courtship', which was entirely through Facebook, the con artist told the victim he had inherited £120,000 Pound Sterling (about RM624,000) from his parents' fortune.

'David' later informed the victim he had mailed the money, which was stashed inside a parcel, to her from the United Kingdom to show his 'passionate love' for her.

"On July 10, the victim received a call from a female, who introduced herself as 'Sharon'. The caller told the victim that the parcel had arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and requested the victim to pay RM6,450 for postal charges," said Gan.

The victim, without hesitation, followed the instructions given by banking the money into an account given by `Sharon'.

"After the first transaction, however, the victim was later inundated with numerous calls from 'Sharon', who asked for more money to settle legal fees for the parcel."

On July 18, 'David' called the victim to say he had arrived in Kuala Lumpur and requested her to bank in some more money to get the parcel released.

It was only then that the victim realised she had been scammed.

Gan said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.

Teenager claims raped by uncle, suspect nabbed

Posted: 16 Aug 2014 11:53 AM PDT

MIRI: A 14 year-old girl has claimed she was raped by her uncle three times during the Ramadan fasting month this year.

She told police on Thursday that the rapes occurred when her aunt was not in the house.

Miri police chief ACP Gan Tian Kee said yesterday that the 42-year-old suspect was arrested at about 4.30pm on Friday in a house at Hilltop Garden.

It is understood that the victim, who is no longer schooling, lives with her grandmother in Bakam, but her aunt brought her to stay with her family in Jalan Cahaya during the recent fasting month, to do housework.

During Hari Raya, the victim returned home to Bakam, but all this while she kept quiet about the alleged rapes.

She only opened up when her aunt came to invite her to her house again.

When she turned down her aunt's request, her aunt became curious and prodded for the reason.

She then told her all that had happened.

Shocked, her aunt immediately brought her to Miri Hospital for a check-up, and later lodged a police report.

Gan said the case is being investigated under Section 376(B) of the Penal Code for incest.

The penalty upon conviction is imprisonment for a term of not less than six years and not more than 20 years, and shall also be liable to whipping.
