KUCHING: The National Housing Department will build 1,500 public housing units under Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) in eight locations across Sarawak this year.

Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan
said this was in addition to the other public housing projects being undertaken here.

"It is estimated that 2,000 more units will be built next year," he told a press conference when breaking fast w

ith personnel from Petra Jaya Fire and Rescue Department here on Tuesday.

Orphans from Laila Taib Welfare Complex, Fire and Rescue Department state director Nor Hisham Mohammad, Women's Bureau director Noriah Ahmad and Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah were also present.

Abdul Rahman, however, said the state government had put forward its views on the need for more affordable and low-cost housing projects in Sarawak during a meeting with Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem earlier in the day.

During the courtesy call, Abdul Rahman and his deputy Datuk Halimah Mohamad Sadique briefed Adenan on the ministry's major policies involving Sarawak.

"Providing affordable and low-cost housing is a universal problem that has become a matter of concern for every state government, including Sarawak," he said.

"We are here to get feedback from the Sarawak government and to learn more about issues surrounding housing-related problems prior to implementation," he added.

Noting the geographical position of Sarawak, Abdul Rahman said it was crucial for the ministry to get local and relevant views before identifying suitable locations for public housing projects.

"I will forward the state government's requests to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak so that he will consider giving more allocation to carry out public housing projects here," he said.

"In addition, I will also extend the views on various issues and proposal raised to Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (PR1MA) and Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) during the national housing meeting later and to advise them to engage the state government before finalising the locations of public housing projects," he said.

Michael Sia continues Sarawak supremacy in hammer throw ...

Posted: 29 May 2014 10:55 AM PDT

KUCHING: Michael Sia Sung Dak has proven to be a worthy successor to Jackie Wong Siew Cheer as Sarawak won the men's hammer throw gold medal for the fourth consecutive Sukma at the Stadium Tuanku Syed Putra, Perlis Sports Complex yesterday.

The Pahang Sukma silver medallist heaved the hammer to a record distance of 56.98m to grab the gold.

Making it a one-two finish for Sarawak in the event was Jackson Wong Chuen Young whose best throw was 50.05m.

The bronze medallist went to Rizhan Rajmi of Perlis with a distance of 46.55m.

In three consecutive Sukma in Terengganu in 2008, Melaka in 2010 and Pahang in 2012, Jackie Wong won the gold and his Sukma record of 55.23 created two years ago was broken by Michael yesterday.

This achievement is also a timely and memorable one for Michael as it is his final Sukma appearance.

The student of Bukit Jalil Sports School, who hails from Bintangor, felt happy for delivering the state contingent's first gold medal in athletics.

"I have worked very hard for this and all my efforts have off handsomely today. I would like to thank my coach Gu Yuan, family and all those who have helped me and supported me," said the thrower who took up hammer throw four years ago.

His next target is to break the national hammer throw record of 62.15m held by Jackie Wong and created at Kuala Lumpur Open last month.

He will continue to train hard and take part in a few competitions in the hope of making it to the national squad for the SEA Games in Singapore in June next year.

Meanwhile, Michael's coach Gu Yuan was happy with his performance yesterday, saying that he had the potential to go further in the hammer throw.

"I have been training him for about a year and I am happy with his discipline and good attitude towards training. He has improved a lot and I believe he is able to better the national record of 62.15m," she said.

Gu was the first Chinese athlete to have won the World Cup hammer throw gold medal with a distance of 70.77m in 2002.

The eight-time Asian Games gold medallist's (1998-2005) best achievement was 72.36m at Asian Games in 2003.

"I am also expecting my other student Casier Renee Lee to do well in the women's hammer throw at this Games," said Gu.

Queenie Ting delivered Sarawak's second gold in athletics yesterday by throwing the discus in the women's competition to a distance of 42.47m in her sixth attempt.

Second was Connie Choo Kn of Johor (37.83m) and the bronze went to another Sarawakian Anny Tang but representing Perlis as she had been studying in the Institute of Teachers Education (IPG) Perlis for three years, with a distance of 34.41m.

Ting expressed her happiness in achieving her target of winning the gold in this event and took the opportunity to thank her coach Thomas Ling for his coaching and guidance.

Another Sarawak athlete Nur Aisyah Ahmat repeated her achievement in Pahang Sukma by coming in third place in the first event of the day, the women's 5,000m walk in 26:15.83.

The gold and silver were won by Elena Goh of Kuala Lumpur in 25:59.38 and Ling En of Johor in 26:06.46.

Also in action yesterday was Ahmad Tarmizi Ahmad Sabirin and Jonathan Nyepa who were disqualified after making false starts.

Tarmizi was disqualified in the men's 100m heat 1 while Jonathan, who clocked the fastest qualifying time of 10.64s, was disqualified in the men's 100m semi-finals heat 1.

Three RTCs for Sabah and Sarawak — Nanta – BorneoPost Online ...

Posted: 01 Jul 2014 12:35 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The Rural and Regional Development Ministry will set up three rural transformation centres (RTCs) in Sabah and Sarawak soon.

Its deputy minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi said two of the RTCs would be built in Sabah, the first time for the state.

The other would be built in Sarawak, the second for the state after the first RTC in Miri, the building of which started in June and expected to be ready this September, he said in reply to a question from Senator Datuk Lihan Jok in the Dewan Negara yesterday.

"Basically, the government only allows the setting up of one RTC in each state, but since Sabah and Sarawak are big states, there will be two RTCs in each of these two states."

Nanta said his ministry was waiting for a proposal from the Sarawak Rural Development Ministry on a suitable site for the state's second RTC.

He said the RTC would provide various facilities including National Registration Department and Social Welfare Department counters, FAMA office, a dental clinic and business lots for local traders.

Nanta said seven Mini RTCs were currently operating in Sarawak, namely in Kuching, Bau, Miri, Sri Aman and Sibu. — Bernama

Sarawak targeting Malaysia Cup - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 07 Jul 2014 11:33 AM PDT

KUCHING: Like any other team competing in the Malaysia Cup, Sarawak too has set its sights on winning the Malaysia Cup, said team manager Datuk Mohd Abu Bakar Marzuki.

"We have a strong team for the Malaysia Cup and we want to be the champion.

Hopefully we can achieve the target," Abu Bakar told Bernama here yesterday adding that even if there are players injured or facing match suspension, there were still capable reserve players who can rise to the occasion.

He added that to prepare for the Malaysia Cup, the team will go for a playing tour in Bandung, Indonesia.

"Our team needs to play friendly matches with good teams over there (Bandung) to keep the team's momentum when facing the tough Malaysia Cup tournament," he added.

He said the Crocs will travel to Indonesia on July 17, and play three friendly matches there against Persib Bandung on July 21 at the Siliwangi Stadium, Persabaya Surabaya on July 23 at the Jatidiri Stadium and against PSIS Semarang on July 25, also at the Jatidiri Stadium.

According to Sarawak coach Robert Alberts, the Crocs had wanted to play their pre-Malaysia Cup friendly matches in Vietnam but was forced to abort the plan due to technical problems.

The last time Sarawak qualified for the Malaysia Cup was in 1999 but lost 1-2 to Brunei.

Speaking of his four foreign players, Abu Bakar said all of them should be fit for the Malaysia Cup challenge, adding that all of them will also be going to Indonesia with the team.

Three import players – Muamir Salibasic, Gabor Gyepes and Hassan El Mohamad had missed several matches in the Super League competition due to injuries while Australian Ryan Griffiths has been a pillar of strength in the team since joining the squad. — Bernama

The project is expected to be completed in phases by 2019 because of the need to have parts of the Sarawak Museum open to visitors.

Among those present were Cahya Mata Sarawak group managing director Datuk Richard Curtis, Sarawak Museum director Ipoi Datan and Arkitek KDI Sdn Bhd director Dato Sri John Lau.
