Crocs suffer setback in Malaysia Cup

Posted: 23 Aug 2014 09:35 AM PDT

KUCHING: Sarawak suffered a heartbreaking loss in their Malaysia Cup campaign against Kedah in a Group B match at Stadium Negeri last night.

The Crocs fielded Joseph Kallang and Griffiths for attack, Mohd Lot Abu Hassan and Junior Eldstal in the midfield, and S Chanturu and Rashid Aya on the flanks.

The back four were Ramesh Lai, Gabor Gyepes, Ronny Harun and Hairyl Mokhtar. Sani Anuar Kamsani was goalkeeper for the match.

Kedah pressed the home team from the start.

The visitors drew first blood in the 32nd minute when Muhd Farhan beat Sarawak's offside trap.

Stunned by the goal, the Crocs responded but squandered a chance to equalise when Gyepes' shot went wide a few minutes later. Three minutes after the breather, Sarawak finally equalised through Ryan Griffiths after connecting a cross from Chanturu.

Both teams came close to scoring, Kedah in the 53rd min and Sarawak through Joseph Kallang in the 61st.

Former Kedah striker Akmal Rizal Ahmad Rakhli came in for  Rashid in the 67th min.

It was an emotional moment for the striker as he was facing his hometown team for the first time this year.

Sarawak wasted another chance to take the lead after Eldstal failed to connect a fine pass in front of the goal mouth.

Former Sarawak goalkeeper Saiful Amar Sudar made a few crucial saves for Kedah.

Billy Osman Mehmet sealed the game for Kedah in the very last minute, scoring a free kick from the edge of the penalty box.

The score remained 2-1 until the final whistle.

Loh springs surprise by winning silver in diving

Posted: 23 Aug 2014 09:33 AM PDT

NANJING, China: National woman diver Loh Zhiayi did the unexpected when she won a silver medal in the 10m platform individual event at the Youth Olympic Games 2014 (YOG 2014) yesterday.

No medal target had been set for the national youth diving squad, but Loh collected 450.65 points to take the silver while China's diver Wu Shenping took the gold after scoring 526.20 points, and the silver went to Orozco Loza Alejandra from Mexico, with 430.25 points.

Loh said initially, she felt pressured to retain the silver won by national diving queen Pandelela Rinong in the same event at the first edition of YOG in Singapore in 2010.

"In the heats, I did my best but I was left far behind in points by the Chinese diver in the final today.

"But I did not give up and tried hard to be better than the Mexican who was close behind," she told Bernama.

Loh said she was happy to have contributed the second medal for the Malaysian contingent after youth badminton player Cheam June Wei won gold in the international mixed doubles event on Friday.

"I wish to award this silver to all the people of my country, Malaysia," said the 16-year-old. — Bernama

Love all set to join Cavaliers

Posted: 23 Aug 2014 09:32 AM PDT

NEW YORK: NBA star centre Kevin Love was expected to be traded Saturday to the Cleveland Cavaliers, joining US Olympic teammate LeBron James in a new "Big Three" for the superstar playmaker.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune, ESPN and USA Today reported Friday that details of a three-team trade have been agreed upon, but the deal cannot be completed until Saturday due to NBA rules regarding the contract of June's top overall NBA Draft pick, Andrew Wiggins.

The Cavaliers would send Wiggins, 2013 top choice Anthony Bennett and a future first-round draft pick to Minnesota in exchange for Love, who will provide the inside size and strength to combine with four-time NBA Most Valuable Player James and guard Kyrie Irving.

Irving signed a long-term deal with the Cavaliers just before James agreed to leave Miami and return to his homeland club last month.

James won two NBA titles and led the Heat to the finals two other times in four seasons with guard Dwayne Wade and forward Chris Bosh as the core "Big Three" around which the Miami roster was built.

Also as part of the deal, Cameroon-born power forward Luc Mbah a Moute and Russian guard Alexey Shved, who sparked a bronze-medal effort by his homeland at the 2012 London Olympics, will go from

Minnesota to Philadelphia in exchange for 76ers power forward Thaddeus Young, who will replace Love in the Timberwolves' line-up.

Minnesota will also send Philadelphia a 2015 first-round draft pick and be able to rebuild around Young, Wiggins and Bennett and young Spanish guard Ricky Rubio.

There is a 30-day waiting period under NBA rules to trade Wiggins from his signing on July 24, a span that expires Saturday, although players must all pass physicals to complete the transfers. — AFP

Rose returns as Curry sparks US over Puerto Rico

Posted: 23 Aug 2014 09:32 AM PDT

NEW YORK: Stephen Curry scored 20 points Friday to lead the United States collection of NBA stars in a 112-86 romp over Puerto Rico in a Basketball World Cup warm-up match.

The Americans also saw the return of Derrick Rose, who had sat out an exhibition victory two nights earlier over the Dominican Republic.

Rose scored six points while passing out four assists in 13 minutes at Madison Square Garden.

A final US 12-man lineup must be settled by next Friday when the Americans try to defend their global crown at the Basketball World Cup in Spain starting Aug 30 against Finland.

A win there would clinch a berth at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Puerto Rico stayed level with the Americans at 24-24 through the first quarter, but a 16-4 US run in the second half put the hosts in front to stay.

The Americans improved to 3-0 in Basketball World Cup warm-up games ahead of a final exhibition Tuesday against Slovenia. — AFP
