NANJING: Unlike other international sports meets, there is no official medal tally to measure the performance of the contingents taking part at the 2nd edition of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG 2014) here.

Malaysia's chef-de-mission to YOG 2014, Wong Pei Tty said the organisers were not providing a medal tally chart for the countries but instead were only updating on the medals won by athletes according to the events.

"According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), YOG is not about results and performance, more about experience, learning and getting to know your future path," she told Bernama here today.

Wong said as for her, the gold medal won by national shuttler Cheam June Wei in the international mixed doubles event today still counted as the first gold medal for Malaysia.

"For me, this is the first medal for Malaysia although in the mixed team, Cheam still had to fight in the court to win this gold medal …This is his achievement," she said.

The victory by Cheam raised questions among the Malaysian media because t he national anthem and flag raising ceremony did not take place during the presentation of medals to the winners.

Cheam who paired up with Ng Tsz Yau of Hong Kong defeated the pair of Tsuneyama Kanta (Japan)/Lee Chia Hsin (Taiwan) in straight sets of 21-14 and 23-21 in the final. — BERNAMA

Beware Kedah’s fighting spirit, says Alberts

KUCHING: Sarawak will have to be very cautious of Kedah's fighting spirit when they lock horns tonight in Group B match of the Malaysia Cup competition at Stadium Negeri.

Head coach Roberts Alberts, who has reminded his players about this, is expecting Kedah to go all out and give their everything to secure at least a point after losing all their group matches so far.

"One thing for sure is that if Kedah still wants to remain in the Malaysia Cup competition this year they are expected to play tomorrow's match as if it is their last. We should do the same too because we are in this competition with ambitions to win it," he said when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.

Looking at the Group B standings, Sarawak are now in third place as they share the same points with Terengganu and are seperated only by goal differences after playing two matches so far, winning their first match 3-2 against the Turtles last week and losing 2-0 to Perak on Wednesday.

Only top two teams of each group qualify for the quarter-finals and Sarawak are keen to match their performance in the competition last year, finishing as semi-finalists after being beaten by eventual champions Pahang.

Hence a win is a must for the Crocs tonight while they hope to see Perak edge or at least draw with Terengganu to realise a chance in returning to second place and subsequently maintaining the top two placings.

On the team's preparation for the match against Kedah, Alberts revealed that he has no other choice but to let the players recover and rest before the match.

"We do not have much time to do other things as we have only two days. It is a tight schedule and we have to make good use of the time we had before we play against Kedah tomorrow," he said.

Although the Crocs did not pick up any injury from the last match against Perak, the former Kedah coach was however concerned about his players as some of them received hard knocks on Wednesday.

On a positive note, Alberts noted that the team might start with the same line-up against Perak previously with the inclusion of defender Ramesh Lai Ban Huat as he returns from injury.

His absence was clearly felt during the last match and his return should do well to bolster's Sarawak's defences against Kedah.

Ramesh is expected to return to action tonight after being injured during the match against Terengganu last week.

Another defender Mafry Balang is however doubtful but he will be assessed before the match.

The match is scheduled to kick-off 8.45pm tonight.

Coach hopes Crocs not distracted by off-field incidents

Posted: 22 Aug 2014 09:41 AM PDT

KUCHING: Sarawak head coach Robert Alberts hopes that his players will not be distracted by the off-field incidents during the previous match against Perak, when they clash with Kedah in the Malaysia Cup match at Stadium Negeri tonight.

He told The Borneo Post yesterday that whether the players like it or not, that is how things are in the world of football albeit being the ugly side of it.

Hence he opined that players must play a role in not letting it ruin the beautiful game by showing that they are never shakened by it.

Despite calling his players to flush the bad memories out of their sysytem, Alberts however understands that nobody likes to be assaulted or being taunted but as a footballer, they should know how to handle such matters.

"I know the Sarawak players are professionals and they are capable of handling such things. Sometimes they do react but to me, players are human beings as well," he added.

During the Malaysia Cup match against Perak in Ipoh last Wednesday, Sarawak's players most notably S Chanturu was targetted by the Perak fans as they chanted racists remarks at him. Other members of the Sarawak team were not spared either.

That prompted Chanturu's teammate Junior Eldstal to comment on his personal Twitter after the match, labelling the incident as "disgusting".

Meanwhile, Perak's fans also went further by verbally and physically attacking Sarawak fans who came to the Perak Stadium to watch the match.

A video of the alleged incident was uploaded on the internet and has gone viral ever since.

Alberts on the other hand hopes that the victims of the assault would notify the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) in order to help them lodge a complaint with the national body, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) regarding the incident.

"It is sad to hear that our supporters were involved in such ugly incidents. I hope the relevant authorities will pay attention to the incident as we do not need to see this type of thing happening to the nation's football scene," he said.

SIBU: Three runners from Kelab Sukan Extreme Marathon Sibu returned with a flourish from the inaugural Kuching Marathon held in Kuching recently.

KSME's top runner Ling Mee Eng was all smiles when she pocketed RM8,000 for grabbing two titles in the Women's 42km Full Marathon for both the International Veteran and Malaysia Open category.

She collected RM4,000 for each category.

Ling posted a time of 3'38.58" which she described as one of her personal best.

In the International Veteran category, Ling's nearest challenger from Indonesia was miles away when she crossed the finishing line.

However, it was the runner from Sabah in the Malaysia Open's category who put Ling under tremendous pressure.

"We kept in pace throughout the run and I only managed to pull ahead in the final lap,' she added.

Ling's next two international runs will be the KL Full Marathon in October and the Penang Bridge Run in November.

"I am training hard for these two events and hopefully, I will be able to return with more impressive results."

Her teammate, Choo Ngiik Hung was also satisfied with her RM800 collection for emerging second in the Women's Open Veteran 21km category where she posted a time of 1'52.24".

Lee Kim Hing, surprisingly, emerged champion in the 21km Men's Veteran Half Marathon to collect RM1,000. His time was 1'23.14".

KSME chairman Tang Ka Seng was happy with the results obtained by his runners.

"We sent 16 runners to take part in the championship and we are satisfied with the overall performance of our team, with two runners winning the champion title and another finishing first runner-up."

A total of 5,500 runners from 30 countries took part in the event which was jointly organised by the Kuching Marathon Association (KMA) and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).

Tang said KSME would continue to send runners to both national and international meets so as to build a name for the club.
