FA president proud of fans, sees exciting era ahead

Posted: 30 Nov 2013 12:25 PM PST

KUCHING: Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) president Datu Sudarsono Osman is proud that Sarawak has arguably the most passionate fans in the league.

Speaking to thesundaypost yesterday, he hoped that the fans would continue supporting the Crocs with the same fervor as they had done in recent years.

"Where else in the country can we find such passionate set of fans like these? We hope the fans will continue their strong support and we will also do our best in delivering our part in bringing more success to Sarawak," he enthused.

He believed with the fans' support and the team proving they could live among the big boys in the Super League Sarawak had moved on to a new exciting phase in the game and recaptured the passion of Ngap Sayot and Alan Vest era in late 1980s and early 90s..

"This is the time, a dawn of a new era for the team. I believe that Sarawak football scene has never been this exciting since the heydays of the team in the late 1980s," he said.

Apart from attracting sold-out crowd for every home match at the Stadium Negeri, Sudarsono was happy to note that Sarawak's merchandise had been selling like hot cakes.

He said like the fans he too had been caught up in the excitement of the team's return to the Super league next season and could not wait for the league to start..

Sarawak were promoted to the 2014 Super League after staying unbeaten in 2013 Premier League to emerge champions. Any doubts about the team's ability to hold their ground among the big guns in the Super League were brushed aside by a good run in the Malaysia Cup tournament.

"After a three-week break, I can see the players are raring to go. There is an air of fresh optimism and we hope that the team continues to progress," said Sudarsono.

The Malaysia Super League will commence next year on January 18.

KUCHING: Sematan's SUKMA champion Rosnina Minggu beat Team Viking's Norismieza Azeman to win the Sematan Mountainbike Challenge Saturday at Camp Pueh.

Rosnina, who won the mountainbike XC gold in last year's Pahang SUKMA, managed to see off a spirited challenge by the Viking junior with a come from behind victory.

Team Corbusier, Sarawak's top team, dominated the men's event to sweep all the podium placings.

Team coach Hj. Supian Nor, perennial champion in Sarawak mountain bike racing, led the way to win the race.

Laurel Lauridsen Adrian, who last Sunday won the Sarawak Health road race, was second followed by up-and-coming junior Garry Tay.

In the women's race, Rosnina and Norismieza stamped their class on the field with an early breakaway.

Norismieza, a Kuching High School Form Five student, struck out on her own midway through the race.

Just as she had heartbreak in the Sarawak Health race when she cramped when within sight of the finish, luck would desert Norismieza again.

After a river crossing, she experienced problems shifting the gears.

While she tried to rectify the issue, Rosnina overtook her to lead by as much as five mins.

It was a lead the SUKMA champ, who was also a SEA Games project rider, maintained till the finish line.

Corbusier's Erra Saffira, a 15-year-old in her first mountain bike race, was a surprised many with her third placing.

Viking's Mahathir Norsman and Khairul Ridzuan finished 14th and 18th respectively in the men's event.

They were in the top ten early on but lost their way and had to do a lot of catching up to finish where they did.

"It was mixed fortune for us but I am quite happy with our results, for the most part," said Team Viking manager Affendy Kadri.

He was disappointed for Norismieza's misfortune in the last part of the race.

"She was only a few kilometres from the finish line and had a good lead. The win was in her hand but the mechanical issue really cost her the race," said Affendy.

"Mahathir and Khairul also did well as they were with the front runners before they lost their way," said Affendy.

KUCHING: Sarawak stamped their supremacy in the 13th Milo-Malaysia Junior (U14) Volleyball Championship in Kuala Selangor, Selangor on Friday by sweeping both the boys and girls titles.

It was a great improvement for the boys who finished third in last year's competition.

They came back strongly from one set down 17-25 to beat Selangor 27-25, 25-23, 25-22 for a 3-1 victory.

The Sarawak boys also swept the Most Valuable Player and Best Spiker awards through Ranjit Ramu while Rodrick Lau was adjudged Best Receiver.

The girls team remained unbeaten throughout the competition faced no problem in overcoming Johor 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-16) to lift their fourth successive title.

Sarawak girls won more honours when Mandy Song Ting Ern was adjudged Most Valuable Player and Best Spiker while her sister Maida Song Hua Ee won the Best Setter award and Ester Joanna Matthew was the Best Blocker.

A very pleased Sarawak head coach Moh Wun Ming when met in Kuching yesterday said the state juniors had delivered the goods as expected of them.

Also chairman of the National Coaches Board, Moh said the success of the state's U14 teams was due to the combined efforts of the Sarawak Volleyball Association (SVA) office-bearers and coaches involved in the development of volleyball at grass roots level.

The SVA leaders included president Temenggong Vincent Lau, vice president Dr Gregory Hii and chairman William Ting.

"We worked well and closely together to maintain the state's volleyball standard and supremacy in the country," said Moh.

"The coaches Pau Chiong Sii (girls) and Yew Yii Hock (boys) have also played a major role in gathering all the players, coaching them and guiding them to victories in the national junior meet," he added.

Admitting that it was a tough competition in the national U14, Moh, who is also the national coach for the SEA Games volleyball squad, said the boys deserved a lot of credit and praise as they fought gallantly with three of their key players injured.

He is also expecting the state juniors to do well in the coming national U16 competition.
