Nationwide Distribution of National Flag to Mark Upcoming Monarch’s Birthday Posted: 01 Aug 2014 07:11 PM PDT BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The people of Brunei Darussalam will celebrate His Majesty the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and the Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 68th birthday on August 14. The giant-sized national flag begins flying in the heart of the capital, marking the start for those bestowed with royal honorary titles to fly their personal flags and normal-sized national flags for the public, ©BRUDIRECT.COM reported. The hoisting of the giant-sized National Flag in conjunction with His Majesty's birthday was held yesterday in a special ceremony at the open air of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex. The ceremony began with the recital of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat. Officiating at the flag hoisting ceremony was Yang Di-Pertua Adat Istiadat Negara, Yang Amat Mulia Pg Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pg Anak Hj Abd Aziz Pg Jaya Negara Pg Hj Abu Bakar, as the Adviser of His Majesty's 68th birthday Celebration National Committee. Also present were the Minister of Home Affairs, Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awg Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Othman and his Deputy, Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Dato Laila Raja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awg Halbi Hj Md Yussof as the Chairman of the oversized National Flag Raising Ceremony's Committee. Sixty eight personnel of the Fire and Rescue and Prison Department paraded the massive National Flag that measures 3.6 metres by 1.8 metres. The flag was then presented to Yang Amat Mulia and later hoisted by personnel of the Royal Brunei Navy. At the ceremony, Yang Amat mulia also presented the National Flags and His Majesty's 68th Birthday Celebration Posters to the Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer, Awg Hj Sunadi Hj Buntar, the Belait District Officer, Awg Hj Haris Othman, the Tutong District Officer, Awg Wardi Hj Md Ali and the Acting Temburong District Officer, Awg Hj Abd Hamid Dato Paduka Hj Abdullah. The National Flag rising and distribution ceremonies marking His Majesty's 68th birthday also took place simultaneously in the other districts yesterday. In the Belait District, the ceremony was held at the Cendera Kenangan Recreation Park in Jalan Sungai, Kuala Belait. The ceremony began with the arrival of the National Flag bearers led by the Belait District Officer; Awg Hj Haris Othman together with the Belait District Adventure Association and Scooters Club. The convoy began its journey from the Sungai Liang Fire Station towards the Cendera Kenangan Tower and passed through several designated routes. The National Flag was then handed over to the Permanent Secretary of Media and Cabinet at the Prime Minister's Office, Awg Hj Md Rozan Dato Paduka Hj Md Yunos. It was later presented to personnel of the Royal Brunei Police Force to be hoisted and preceded with the song entitled "Bendera Negara dan Rahmat" (National Flag and Blessings) and the distribution of the National Flags to Penghulu mukims. In the Tutong District, the National Flag hoisting ceremony took place at the Civic Centre Complex. The flag bearers were led by the Assistant Tutong District Officer, Awg Hj Adnan Hj Adam. The sixty eight flag bearers composed of personnel of Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Prisons Department, Fire and Rescue Department, Four Wheel Drive Association, Tutong District Motorcycle Association (KEKAL) as well as youths from Kg Kiudang. The Tutong District Officer, Awg Wardi Hj Md Ali later presented the National Flag to the Permanent Secretary of Defence Policy and Development at the Ministry of Defence, Colonel (Rtd) Pg Dato Paduka Hj Azmansham Pg Hj Mohammad. Personnel from the Royal Brunei Police Force then hoisted the National Flag and followed by the song entitled "Bendera Negara, Dirgahayu Dan Raja Berdaulat". The National Flags was also presented to Penghulu Mukims. Similar ceremony was also held in the Temburong District at the open area of the Wharf in Bangar Town. It began with the presentation of the National Flag by the Acting Temburong District Officer, Awg Ajmin Hj Meludin to the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato Paduka Awg Hj Md Hamid Hj Md Jaafar. The ceremony proceeded with the National Anthem and the song entitled "Bendera Negara" as well as the distribution of the National Flags to Penghulu Mukims. As of yesterday, people in the country are urged to fly the National Flags until the end of this month as a show of undivided loyalty to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam as well as to enliven the Royal Birthday celebration. In the Brunei-Muara District, the Flag raising and distribution ceremony was held at the open area of the Dewan Muhibbah of the Brunei-Muara District Office. The function began with the reading of Al-Fatihah and preceded with the handing-over of the National Flag by the Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer, Awg Hj Sunadi Hj Buntar to personnel of the Royal Brunei Police for the hoisting ceremony which was accompanied by the national anthem by the choir team from the Language and Literature Bureau. His Majesty the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and the Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohammed Alam consented to receive in audience the people of Brunei Darussalam and other visitors for the Junjung Ziarah and Hari Raya greetings, ©BRUDIRECT.COM reported. His Majesty the Sultan And Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to receive the male well-wishers. Accompanying His Majesty were His Majesty's princes and brother, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah the Crown Prince; His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah; His Royal Highness Prince Haji Abdul Azim; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen and His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Wakeel. The tradition of exchanging visits during the festivities has been practised in Brunei Darussalam for a long time, but the unique thing about the Abode of Peace is that on every Hari Raya Aidil Fitri, the Monarch consents to open the palace to personally greet the rakyat, residents and other well-wishers. Brunei Darussalam is one of the few countries where the ruler has a special relationship with the people. The special bond manifests itself during Aidilfitri when His Majesty welcomes the people and other visitors and entertains them as Palace guests regardless of their background. Istana Nurul Iman will open again today from 10am until 12pm and again from 2pm until 4pm in the afternoon. |

Their Majesties with members of the royal family received a total of twenty one thousand nine hundred and eighty four visitors at the palace during the morning session from 10am to 12 noon. The afternoon session began at 2pm and concluded at 4pm where it saw additional fourteen thousand seven hundred and twenty six people. Accompanying His Majesty to receive the male half of the citizens at Baitul Rahmah Hall were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office; His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade; His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Wakeel and other members of the royal family. Firecrackers left a family of five in tears as fire destroyed their home Posted: 29 Jul 2014 06:15 PM PDT BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: While Muslims in the Sultanate rejoice in the glory of Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, a family in Kg Sungai Besar at Jalan Kota Batu in the Brunei-Muara District was gripped with agonising sorrow when their home was gutted in a fire that also damaged a nearby house, Brudirect reported. The fire razed the home of Awg Hj Moktal Hj Latif's house to the ground. An old house nearly which has been unoccupied for some time was also damaged. The sixty-eight-year-old Hj Moktal lives in the house with five members of his family. Fortunately, neither injury nor casualty was reported in the incident. According to the Fire and Rescue Services, rescuers received an emergency call at about 8:15 in the evening. It immediately dispatched twenty eight firemen supported by seven fire engines from the Bandar Seri Begawan, Mentiri, Muara and Marine Stations to the scene. The Fire and Rescue Services said it managed to control the blaze within eighteen minutes. It was believed that the fire was started by firecrackers. In the wake of the incident, parents and guardians are urged to keep an eye on their children while playing with firecrackers. They must ensure that the remnants of the firecrackers are completely extinguished. 66 cases of dengue fever reported this year Posted: 28 Jul 2014 06:12 PM PDT BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: A total of 66 dengue fever cases were reported in the country from January to June 2014, Brudirect reported. The Ministry of Health (MoH) in a statement said that the number was low compared to the same period in the past two years. However, there is a slight increase in the total number of dengue fever cases for the month of July with a total of 42 cases reported. The Ministry of Health also informs the public that the dengue fever situation is under control. In ensuring that the prevention and control of dengue fever is effective and sustainable, the public is advised to be cautious, especially in keeping the surroundings clean and to eliminate Aedes mosquito breeding places and to comply with any instructions issued by the Ministry of Health. The Ministry will continue to monitor the situation from time to time and will inform any developments to the public. Without a doubt, these factors contribute to the increase number of tourists into the country. According to the Tourism Development Department, 224,904 tourists were recorded last year. The figure showed an increase in comparison with year 2012. One of the favourite tourist destination is Kampong Ayer. Cruising along the Brunei River to witness a major part of the residents at Kampong Ayer is one of the main top tourist choice. The establishment of Kampung Ayer which started during the reign of the first Sultan of Brunei, contains a lot of history and legends which shape's the civilization of the people of Brunei. The Culture and Tourism Gallery of Kampong Ayer and the Kampong Ayer upgrading pioneer project also caught the tourists' attention. Various collections of old pictures and artifacts were displayed as well as handicrafts which were sold to the tourists. The project was a section of the Kampong Ayer residence which are conserved, clean and safe but also ensures family life for generations.
