Sarawak finish third in Inter-state bowling meet Posted: 12 Apr 2014 10:12 AM PDT by Ting Tieng Hee. Posted on April 13, 2014, Sunday KUCHING: Sarawak put on a gutsy performance to finish third overall with two gold, three silver and three bronze medals in the Astro 27th Interstate Bowling Championships at Megalanes, Sunway Pyramid from April 8-10. It was a very good exposure outing for some of the Sukma shadow team bowlers especially the young Mohd Uzair Irsyad Noor Azrul who finished as the best performer in the competition. Uzair bagged the gold in the Boy's All Events after he felled 3,739 pins to finish ahead of Prasert Anansathaporn of Kuala Lumpur (3,665) and Muhd Nashhan Onn of Johor (3,664). He was also a member of the team which captured the silver in the Boy's Team event and he picked a personal bronze in the Boy's Singles event. The other gold for Sarawak came from the winning combination of Jonathan Ding Sagan and Isaac Russell Paul who downed 2,698 pins in the Men's Doubles. Daniel Tan Yan Han and Christopher Tiong Lee Sing made it a one-two finish to grab the silver with 2,557 pins while the Johor pair of Syed Mohd Hafiz Syed Hussin and Muhd Nur Aiman came in third with 2,541 pins. Jonathan also collected a bronze in the Men's All Events when he managed 3,837 pins. Sarawak's other silver was delivered by Mohd Uzair, Musayyar Khalid, Anthony Luang Cheng and Muhd Syafiq Sajeli who accumulated 4,726 pins in the Boy's Team event. Kuala Lumpur took the gold with 4,852 pins while Sabah were third with 4,675 pins. In the women's doubles, Jackelyn Ng Shuk Chen and Jocelyna Judith Jonathan felled a total of 2,503 pins to collect the silver. They only lost to the Selangor pair of Siti Safiyah Anuah and Shalin Zulkifli by a mere five pins. Third were another Selangor pair of Selva Nivashini and Natasha Roslan with 2,437 pins. Meanwhile, the team of Jackelyn Ng, Jocelyna, Nadine Kong Xiao Feng and Dayang Khairuniza Dhiyana Jamalidon felled 4,664 pins to finish third in the Women's Team event. Selangor topped the championships with seven golds, three silvers and four bronzes while runners-up Kuala Lumpur collected five golds, four silvers and two bronzes. Team manager Robert Lu, who is Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak (Abas) deputy president and also team coach, said he was pleased with the performance of his keglers. "I think overall, they have done well and it is encouraging to see the youngsters, who form the majority of our men's and women's teams, performing well in the competition," he said in a telephone interview yesterday. "It is a good exposure for the Sukma bowlers who are preparing for Sukma XVII in Perlis next month." Lu added that world women's singles champion and national bowler Jacqueline Jenelee Sijore did not participate in the two competitions as she was injured. The state team of four men, four women, four boys and four girls are still competing in the Astro 38th Malaysian National bowling championship at the same venue which is expected to finish today. Their head coach is Jackson Ting and he is assisted by Angelo Koay and Bong Kihow. |
Sarawak halt Terengganus chances to top Super League Posted: 12 Apr 2014 10:10 AM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak prevented high-riding Terengganu for helming the Super League with a 2-1 win over the East Coast giant at the Stadium Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, Kuala Terengganu on Friday. Terengganu failed to capitalise on home ground advantage to dislodge League leader Pahang and had to be satisfied with their third placing in the table prior to the match. However Sarawak latest foreign signing import Ryan Griffiths, former Australian striker, finally found his scoring touch in the 76th minute, which turned out to be the winning goal after team mate S Chanturu put the team ahead as early as in the second minute. Terengganu had to thank Sarawak's Junior Edstal for cancelling the lead in the 38th minute with his own goal. After Friday's match, Sarawak are seventh in the table with 16 points. — Bernama We encourage commenting on our stories to give readers a chance to express their opinions; please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. Liverpool, City set for emotional showdown Posted: 12 Apr 2014 10:09 AM PDT LONDON: Carried by a wave of raw emotion, leaders Liverpool will look to land a potentially decisive blow in the Premier League title race when they host Manchester City on Sunday. Tributes to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster will frame the encounter and with Liverpool on course for a first title since 1990, Anfield is likely to be a cauldron of fervour and belief. As with every other game in England this weekend, kick-off will occur seven minutes later than scheduled as a mark of respect for the 96 Liverpool fans who died after a fatal crush at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium during an FA Cup semi-final in 1989. The timing reflects the moment at which that game against Nottingham Forest was called to a halt. Former players from the two sides will exchange wreaths prior to the match, which will also be preceded by a rendition of the Liverpool anthem, 'You'll Never Walk Alone', and a minute's silence. Fresh inquests into the deaths opened recently after the original coroner's verdicts of accidental death were quashed following a campaign by victims' families, whose wounds remain as fresh as ever. While no amount of on-pitch success will ever provide adequate consolation, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says that his side's title bid is inspired by memories of the Hillsborough dead. "We can't say too much about Hillsborough because the inquests are under way," he said earlier this week. "But as a manager coming into the football club, I know there are 96 people in the sky who will always be supporting this football team. "If we are to achieve anything this year, they will always be in our thoughts — the 96 in the sky and the families that go with them." The rawness of the occasion leaves City in an uncomfortable position, and manager Manuel Pellegrini has encouraged his players to approach the game with clear heads. "It will be a very emotional day, but the team that has the cold mind will win the game," said the Chilean. "It is easy in these big games to have the motivation, but it is very important to manage the anxiety. That is very important for all the players." Pellegrini has also claimed that it is "not a game that will decide the title", but a win for either side would alter the picture significantly, as both sides know that they will be champions if they win all of their remaining matches. City, who trail Liverpool by four points with two games in hand, received a huge fillip prior to the game with the news that top scorer Sergio Aguero will be fit to play after five games out with a hamstring problem. Apart from centre-back Matija Nastasic, who has an ongoing knee complaint, Pellegrini has a fully fit squad to select from, while left-back Jose Enrique (also knee) will be the only absentee for the home side. With 29 goals to his name, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez needs just two more goals to equal the Premier League scoring record for a 38-game season, but he says that the team's requirements come first. "Of course it would be special," said the Uruguayan. "But for myself, it is more important that Liverpool finish in a good position. I try in every game to score because I am a striker." Back-to-back defeats at City and Chelsea left Liverpool six points below leaders Arsenal at the turn of the year, but a burst of nine consecutive wins (during which they have plundered 32 goals) has propelled them to the summit. City have an impressive record against Liverpool in recent seasons, however, having avoided defeat in their last five league encounters. Rodgers can nonetheless take heart from the fact that his side have won all four of their home meetings against the other teams in the top seven so far this season, scoring 14 times and conceding only once. — AFP |
Sub-plots everywhere in semi-final match-ups Posted: 12 Apr 2014 10:07 AM PDT PARIS: Friday's Champions League semi-final draw threw up a meeting of two of the great old foes of the European game and kept alive the possibility of a Madrid derby in the final itself. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho might have something to say about that of course, as he leads his side into a last-four clash with Atletico Madrid with his sights set on becoming the first coach to win the European Cup with three different clubs. As if that were not motivation enough, Mourinho would surely love to create history this year, when the final will be played in his native Portugal, and at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, where his managerial career began with Benfica at the start of the last decade. However, he will know not to underestimate Diego Simeone's Atletico, who ensured that Mourinho's three-year stint in charge of Real Madrid ended in disappointment when they defeated their city rivals in last season's Copa del Rey final at the Santiago Bernabeu. Mourinho's reputation as a master motivator and tactician is second to none, but Simeone is doing a remarkable job with Atletico, whose budget is modest in comparison to their last-four rivals. The Argentine led Atleti to a 4-1 win against Chelsea in the final of the UEFA Super Cup at the start of last season, and if the prolific Radamel Falcao, a hat-trick hero in that game, has since moved on, the team have coped just fine without him. Indeed, their success has been built around defensive solidity, and they have conceded only five goals in 10 Champions League games this season. Perhaps the main reason for that is Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who is on loan at the Vicente Calderon from Chelsea and looks set to play against his parent club after UEFA ruled any clause in his contract preventing him from facing them was against competition rules. — AFP |
Spurs secure best record in NBA with win over Suns Posted: 12 Apr 2014 10:07 AM PDT SAN ANTONIO: Danny Green drained seven three-pointers and scored 33 points on Friday as San Antonio assured themselves of the best record in the NBA with a 112-104 win over Phoenix. Green connected on 12 of 17 shots from the field and seven of 10 from three-point range for the Spurs, who rallied from a 21-point deficit for a win that clinched home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. San Antonio point guard Tony Parker, who sat out Thursday's victory against the Dallas Mavericks, scored 18 points as the Spurs won their 15th straight home game. Eric Bledsoe scored 30 points with 11 rebounds and nine assists for the Suns, who had a three-game winning streak end. Phoenix are now tied with Memphis for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Grizzlies, who beat Philadelphia 117-95 on Friday, hold the tiebreaker with the Suns by virtue of winning the head-to-head regular-season series. Elsewhere in the West, the Golden State Warriors secured a playoff berth with a 112-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Stephen Curry posted his fourth triple-double this season, scoring 30 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds for a Warriors team who now sit 1 1/2 games ahead of Dallas for the sixth seed in the West. Curry joined Indiana's Lance Stephenson and Chicago's Joakim Noah as the only players with four triple-doubles this season. Minnesota's Corey Brewer scored a career-high 51 points to lead the Timberwolves to a 112-110 victory over Houston. Brewer became the fifth player this season to surpass the 50-point mark in a game. "I never in my career expected to score 50," said Brewer, whose previous career high was 29. — AFP |
