Immigration explains incident involving Sarawak minister ...

Posted: 01 Apr 2014 05:52 PM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Immigration Department has denied claims that Sarawak Land Development Minister Tan Sri Dr James Masing was detained at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA).

Its director, Noor Alam Khan Abdul Wahid Khan, pointed out that the officer on duty at the KKIA immigration counter had only conducted a regular identification screening procedure when he asked Masing to present his identification card to verify his use of the Special Identification document on March 30 at about 6pm.

"It was simply a misunderstanding as the immigration officer on duty was just conducting a documentation screening as he would other passengers' identification cards and passports.

"Although the minister did present his 'Pengenalan Istimewa' (Special Identification) document, it was not immediately explanatory and not all of our officers are used to seeing such documents.

"Hence, our officer had asked him (Masing) to present his identification card," said Noor Alam when contacted here yesterday.

Noor Alam disclosed that the officer on duty during the incident had been contacted and had clarified the situation at that point of time, whereby Masing had presented his Special Identification document to the immigration officer.

Masing was then asked to present his identification card to verify his identity, which is part of the normal procedure, he added.

He said Masing was not detained as he was not brought into a special room at the airport. The incident took place at the immigration counter when Masing was exiting the state and not on entry, as previously reported in the media.

Masing on March 31 was reported as saying that he was detained by Sabah Immigration Officers on March 30 for being mistaken as an imposter.

He had shown his Special Identification document, a special pass used by political representatives and ministers at the counter but was reportedly not allowed in, in the mistaken belief that he was using a fake pass.

The confusion apparently was due to his attire, as Masing was in jeans and tee-shirt.

Masing was quoted as saying that he had a tough time convincing the officers that he was genuine despite his clothing.

"I was detained probably because I was wearing jeans. I did not realise that YBs and ministers must use smart attire in Sabah.

"It was embarrassing. I have to prove that I am James Masing as shown in the identity card," said Masing.

DAP Sarawak respects Karpal Singh's decision to step down as ...

KUCHING: DAP Sarawak chief Chong Chieng Jen and party members support Karpal Singh's decision to step down as the party's chairman.

"DAP party members in Sarawak and the whole nation salute his political dedication and that he was worthy of the chairmanship when he was helming it," said Chong when contacted by thesundaypost yesterday.

Chong, who is also DAP vice chairman, was commenting on Karpal's decision yesterday to step down as the party's number one following his recent conviction under the Sedition Act.

His deputy, Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai, now assumes the post of acting chairman.

Several online news reports quoted Karpal as citing legalities as reason for him to step aside.

This is because under Section 9A(1)(b) of the Societies Act 1966, a person cannot remain an officer bearer of a registered society if he or she had been found guilty of any offence and fined not less than RM2,000 or sentenced to jail for a term not less than one year.

Karpal nonetheless remained as Bukit Gelugor MP.

On March 11, Karpal was found guilty of sedition for questioning Perak ruler Sultan Azlan Shah on his decision to remove former Perak Menteri Besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin from his post in February 2009.

Karpal was subsequently fined RM4,000 by the Kuala Lumpur High Court under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act.

On a related matter, Chong, who is Bandar Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, revealed that the party would have their Central Executive Committee meeting on April 27.

Among the items up for discussion will be the party chairmanship and other party matters.

On the fate of Bukit Assek assemblyman Wong Ho Leng, who had not been active this year, Chong said it would be best if Wong's family gave some feedback of his personal stature.

Chong said he would not like to speculate on the fate of the Bukit Asset seat if something happened to Wong, who is Chong's predecessor.

Recruitment drive gets mixed reaction - The Borneo Post Online

More should be done to change perception of Chinese community about 'unlikely promotions' in police force

KUCHING: The police's ongoing nationwide campaign to recruit Chinese youths into the force is receiving mixed reactions from the locals.

Several Chinese youths met yesterday said they were not aware of the recruitment drive.

"Frankly, I think the police should carry out more promotional efforts on their recruitment because I honestly didn't know there's such a recruitment campaign going on until very recently," said IT executive Wilson Chin.

"The police should work very closely with Chinese associations and clans in Sarawak to really get the message across to the Chinese youths."

Asked if he would consider joining the police force if he were fresh out from school, Chin said he would consider applying if the benefits were up to his expectations.

"I would probably apply if they were to state a good package to benefit a police constable."

For 26-year-old student Ivan Ong, the idea of becoming a policeman never crossed his mind.

"The police are looking to recruit Chinese youths because they are generally a more disciplined lot and also due to the many non-Chinese in the police force now.

"However, I don't think I want to join the force because it is not what I'm interested in. I also believe that many other Chinese youths are not interested either," he said.

Meanwhile, the chairman of Chung Hua Middle School (CHMS) No 1, 3 & 4 Board of Management, Richard Wee, expressed his support for the recruitment drive but also believed that more should be done to change the perception of the Chinese community about the police force.

"I think it is good that they try to recruit the Chinese rather than to always pave way for Bumiputeras to apply.

"But I must say it is not entirely about the Chinese not wanting to join the police force or the army. There is always a negative perception that the Chinese are rarely considered for promotion."

Wee said that promotion must be fairly executed because that's the major setback for non-Bumiputeras when joining the police force.

"In the olden days, people of all races took pride when they were selected to join the police force or the civil service, but today, that has all changed. There is this perception that Chinese or non-Bumiputeras have a lesser chance of getting the promotion they deserve.

"If the government can address this (promotion) issue the people will have the impression that what they are signing up for is not a dead-end job," he said.

The state police, in collaboration with The Federation of Kuching and Samarahan Division Chinese Association, will kick off its police constable recruitment drive for Chinese youths (male and female) at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Auditorium from 5pm onwards today.

Association president Temenggong Lu Kim Yong said they were working closely with the police in their bid to raise awareness on the campaign among Chinese youths.

"We have received numerous calls from the public asking about the campaign so hopefully they will turn up to learn more about the police force," he said when contacted yesterday.

He added the campaign would also include a talk at 7pm by senior police officers to give a clearer picture on the police force.

He also said the police had since relaxed several conditions in their recruitment process to give opportunities to many Chinese youths between the ages of 18 and 28 years to join the force.

"The conditions include a pass in Bahasa Melayu in SPM and a perfect vision," he said.

There will also be a recruitment campaign at Eastern Mall in Siburan from 9am to 9pm tomorrow (April 5).
