TAMBUNAN: A Perodua Viva vehicle driver was killed after colliding head-on with a Toyota RAV4 vehicle at kilometre 10 near Tikolod village near here yesterday.

District police chief DSP Robert Salisip @ David disclosed yesterday that the local driver of the Perodua Viva vehicle, identified as Larai @ Willie Panaya, 54, from Kampung Timbou here, died on the spot in the 12.45pm accident.

The driver of the Toyota RAV4, Resideh @ Rashidie Marujin, 62, from Kampung Baginda, Keningau and his wife, Juliet @ Julia Abdullah, 48, suffered minor injuries and were given outpatient treatment at Tambunan hospital.

"The accident happened when the driver of the Perodua Viva was on the way alone from Keningau to Tambunan. He had apparently veered to the right lane and collided with the Toyota RAV4 coming from the opposite direction. He reportedly died on the spot after being trapped in his seat from severe injuries to his chest," he said.

Robert said it was highly possible that the victim could have fallen asleep while driving as there were no signs of any brake marks at the scene.

He said the driver of the Toyota RAV4 and passenger suffered only minor injuries and the accident site was a straight, paved road with dry surface. The weather was also good during the accident.

Robert said both vehicles had been taken to the Keningau police headquarters for further investigation.

On being informed of the accident, six members of the Tambunan Fire and Rescue Department rushed to the scene to help remove the driver trapped inside the vehicle.

Rashidie and his wife, Julia, were sent to the Tambunan hospital by an ambulance called by the public.

Deputy Chief Minister and Infrastructure Development Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who happened to pass that way, inspected the site of the accident and advised road users to always be careful while on the road.

Sabah to continue Visit Malaysia Year promotions – Masidi

Posted: 31 Mar 2014 10:27 AM PDT

by Nancy Lai. Posted on April 1, 2014, Tuesday

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will proceed with promoting the state in conjunction with 'Visit Malaysia Year 2014', said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun.

"For me the government has announced and declared 2014 as Visit Malaysia Year (VMY), so we will continue with our promotion but with some adjustments taking into consideration what had happened," said Masidi when met by reporters after officiating the Sabah Tourist Guides Association (STGA) annual dinner on Sunday night.

He said this when asked if Sabah will be going ahead with its promotion after Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Nazri Aziz's announcement in the Dewan Rakyat that all roadshows and activities overseas in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2014 will be temporarily halted out of respect for the families of the passengers on board the missing Flight MH370.

Masidi in his reply added that what had happened must be taken as challenges in the tourism industry.

"We should not be disappointed that this has happened, maybe this incident is what we need to improve ourselves so that we are better prepared in the future," he said.

To a question if tourist arrivals to Sabah had been negatively affected by the incident, Masidi said, "We have to bear in mind that most of the bookings are 'forward booking' which were made before the incident happened. As I said before, we will not be able to see the implication the incident has on the tourist arrival through the immediate statistics….maybe we will be able to see the results in two to three months' time.

He added that a small panel to study the ramifications and implications of the MH370 case on the state's tourism industry had been set up at Sabah Tourism Board.

"I hope that people will not interpret it in a negative way because we always try to be one step ahead of anything," he said.

When asked if Sabah's tourism sector is feeling the effect of China travellers' boycott, Masidi stressed that it was too early to confirm that tourists from China were not travelling to Malaysia.

"We understand that many have lost their family members in the case and they are still emotional with what had happened which is why they are angry. However, it is too early to say that tourists from China boycott Malaysia.

"We must give them ample time and space to accept the fact and we will see after that. If needed we will adjust out strategy for this year but I am very confident that if there should be any negative effects, it would not prolong.

"We are living in a borderless world and people will have to travel so obviously for the time being when you are angry you may not want to travel but in the future people are going to become reasonable and accept the fact that there are things in our lives that we cannot control," he said.

Investigate illegal logging, elephant deaths – Ghapur

Posted: 31 Mar 2014 10:26 AM PDT

TAWAU: The authorities, including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), have been asked to investigate whether there are cases of illegal logging at Gunung Rara Forest Reserve here, following the deaths of 14 Pygmy Elephants in the area early last year.

Kalabakan member of parliament Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh said a thorough investigation should be conducted to identify if their habitats had been affected by illegal logging and the cause of death of the elephants.

"We want to know whether the forest reserve is still perfect or already intruded by illegal loggers. If that has happened, we want those responsible brought to justice immediately," he said yesterday.

Ghapur added that the same matter was voiced in the Dewan Rakyat recently.

The elected representative also asked the authorities to complete the investigation on the death of the elephants because the incident had received attention from various quarters, and internationally.

In January 2013, 14 Borneo Pygmy elephants, aged between four and 20 years, were found dead at Gunung Rara Forest Reserve, about 139 kilometers from Tawau .

All the elephants that were found dead were believed from a herd of elephant family and preliminary investigations believe that they died due to poisoning.

Construction can only start after signing agreement – Native Chief

Posted: 31 Mar 2014 10:26 AM PDT

by Jenne Lajiun. Posted on April 1, 2014, Tuesday

KOTA KINABALU: An heir to his deceased mother's property at Kampung Nosoob Baru near here was yesterday told that he cannot simply begin construction work on the lot where his mother's house stood prior to signing an 'Aku Janji' agreement.

Penampang Native Chief Andrew S. Lidaun told the defendant, Paul Suinggi, that he cannot begin construction work on the lot even if it belonged to his mother until he signed the 'Aku Janji' agreement which signified his acceptance to become a member of Kampung Nosoob Baru.

He informed the defendant that Kampung Nosoob Baru has been gazetted as a 'kampung' 14 years ago which upheld that the land within the 'kampung' grounds' is to be used only by the natives of Kampung Nosoob Baru.

"Anyone who is not native of Kampung Nosoob Baru is disallowed to construct a house there," he informed, adding that new members must first receive the approval from the village head before they are allowed to stay in the village.

He described the village head and the JKKK as caretakers of the village to prevent illegal immigrants and outsiders from setting up their houses within the village reserve.

"Without such an arrangement, anyone can come in. This is the tradition of the Kampung Nosoob Baru, which has a population of 1,800 people," he said.

Andrew also informed that the Kampung Nosoob Baru reserve falls under the responsibility of its village head, the Penampang district officer and the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).

The defendant was however unable to decide after the explanation whether to sign the 'Aku Janji' agreement or not. Andrew then fixed the next hearing of the case on April 15.

Earlier, Kampung Nosoob Baru JKKK chairman Carfester J. Mokujin told the court that they were not informed by the defendant on the construction work he intended to carry out. Accordingly a stop work notice was served on the defendant, but the latter continued with the construction.

The defendant, meanwhile, alleged that he has stayed at his mother's house for 37 years and had intended to re-construct the house belonging to his mother. He added that he disagreed with the 60 feet by 60 feet lot size that has been set in the 'Aku Janji' agreement and felt that it was unfair to him.

The village head of Kampung Nosoob Baru is Augustin Anthony.

BEAUFORT: A 41-year-old maintenance contract worker was killed when he was hit by a train at kilometre 95.1 Jalan Beaufort-Kota Kinabalu near here on Sunday.

It was learnt that the local worker was replacing the railway tracks and did not hear the warning sounds of the incoming train due to heavy rain and noise from the machine he was using.

Ir. Ismail Ahmad, acting general manager of Sabah Railway Department, said the train driver honked several times to warn the workers working on the railway track. However, the warning sound was not heard by the victim due to the heavy rain and noise of the machinery he was using.

A co-worker managed to jump out of the way when he noticed the train which was enroute to Beaufort from Halogilat station. Unfortunately, the victim was not able to escape in time resulting in him being hit by the train at around 2.50pm.

Ismail added the train needed at least 100 metres before it could come to a complete stop.

Meanwhile, Beaufort police chief DSP Mustaffa Maarof Mustaffa said the victim died on the spot from severe head injuries.

He added that the body of the victim would be sent to the hospital for a post-mortem and the police had classified the case as sudden death.

Not BN’s way to table motion for higher oil royalty – UPKO

Posted: 31 Mar 2014 10:24 AM PDT

by Nancy Lai. Posted on April 1, 2014, Tuesday

PENAMPANG: United Pasokmomugum Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) will continue to pursue its request for an increase in the oil royalty paid to Sabah, its acting president, Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau said.

Tangau who was met after a symbolic handing over of duties between him and his predecessor Tan Sri Bernard Dompok at the party's headquarters here, was asked to comment on the call by DAP Sabah chairman Jimmy Wong on Sabah members of parliament to table a motion on the oil royalty increase.

"Tabling a motion in parliament is the opposition's tactic, that is not the BN way. I just want to reiterate that UPKO before the 13th GE had submitted to the BN headquarters our request for a 20 per cent increase in the oil royalty.

"It is a struggle that we will continue to pursue and there is no need to go to parliament. When you go to parliament it is not necessarily will be done. We are fighting for the issue within the BN framework and we are quite sure that other BN component parties will support," the Tuaran member of parliament said.

Meanwhile, when asked what his focus for UPKO would be, Tangau said he would firstly reappoint those who had automatically resigned from their posts in the party and then take it from there.

"But as far as the direction of the party, we will continue with what Tan Sri Bernard as the former president has done. Our leadership's approach has always been Focus Berani Ikhlas," he said.

Tangau explained that according to the party constitution, when a president resigns all who were appointed by the president automatically resign too.

"A party cannot function if these posts such as the secretary general, are not filled," he said adding that he would discuss with the elected supreme council members and would make a decision on the appointments which would be in effect until the next party election in 2016.

Tangau expressed hope that UPKO members and leadership would continue to be united and work together as a team.

"I hope that despite whatever happened during the party election, we can still continue to work together as a team," he said.
