Sarawak Bumi entrepreneurs want to enter Singapore market via ... Posted: 29 Mar 2014 11:54 AM PDT JOHOR BAHARU: The Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development Unit (UPUB) wants to make Johor the main launch pad for the state's entrepreneurs to enter the Singapore market. "Johor is seen as a business hub not only by Singapore, but is also a focus of investors from all the states in Peninsular Malaysia," UPUB Assistant Director Syed Ismail Wan Hashim told Bernama when met at the Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Showcase 2014 (SUBS 2014) at Plaza Angsana here yesterday. Syed Ismail, the SUBS 2014 Manager, said the event, which began on Thursday and ends on tonight, not only provides an opportunity to promote Sarawak's products but also enables the Bumiputera entrepreneurs involved to explore the market here. Some 56 entrepreneurs are promoting the state's handicrafts, food and beverage as well as herbal medicinal products (including Sarawak layer cake and 'tahai' smoked fish) at this third edition of the annual showcase, and they are targeting sales of RM250,000, up from RM200,000 last year. Maria Pesona Beauty Herb founder Kamaria Pandi, who is at the showcase for the third year, said there is rising demand for her cinnamon-based herbal medicinal products, which are now distributed by five stockists in Brunei. Helmi Chik, who has been in the Sarawak batik industry since he was 17 years old, expressed hope that more young people would be interested in Sarawak batik, which he said is unique as it incorporates cultural elements from 47 sub-ethnic groups in the state. — Bernama |

Kawasari CPP in Block SK316 off Sarawak in pre-qualified FEED ... Posted: 28 Mar 2014 10:23 AM PDT KUCHING: Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd (Petronas Carigali) has reportedly called for a pre-qualification exercise for parallel front-end engineering and design (FEED) studies for a multi-platform project involving a central processing platform (CPP) at the Kasawari field, the second such development in Block SK316 off Sarawak. This huge project involves a 30,000-tonne eight-legged CPP which has topsides weighing 19,000 tonnes, a nine-slot wellhead platform, a bridge link, a flare tower and a central collection platform, states AmResearch Sdn Bhd (AmResearch) As the structures could weigh up to 37,000 tonnes compared to SK316 CPP's 33,100 tonnes, which was awarded last year to a Technip-Malaysia Marine & Heavy Engineering Holdings (MMHE) joint-venture, AmResearch Sdn BHd (AmResearch) estimated that this Kasawari development could easily cost over US$1 billion or RM3.3 billion. "It is not surprising that the three engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) integrated domestic players – MMHE, SapuraKencana Petroleum and TH Heavy Engineering – have been invited for the pre-qualifying process," AmResearch said. "Overseas players that may be invited include Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, McDermott International, Singapore's Sembcorp Marine, and Abu Dhabi's National Petroleum Construction Company." The yard operators are required to team up with Petronas' engineering partners such as Petrofac's RNZ, Technip, Aker Solutions, WorleyParsons, and MMC Oil & Gas Engineering. "Petronas has limited the participation to contractors with a minimum of 10 years of experience in handling projects involving carbon dioxide removal process given that the gas from the Kasawari field contains high carbon dioxide content, which could be more costly to extract and produce," AmResearch added, noting that Petronas plans to shortlist not more than three bidders for the FEED study before the issuance of a tender, likely in May this year. "Whichever company or joint venture wins this parallel FEED contest will also secure the EPCIC contract, which is likely to be awarded in the second half of 2015. First gas from Kasawari is targeted three years from the award of the turnkey contract, with the offshore production structures scheduled to be completed within 15 months. "As Technip took charge of the conceptual studies of the Kasawari field development, and the joint venture between Technip and MMHE had eventually secured the first SK316 CPP, we believe they stand as the most likely candidates to secure this project." Kasawari is a major natural gas discovery with over three trillion cubic feet of gas in reserves. Gas produced from this field will be transported to the ninth train at Petronas' Liquefied Natural Gas complex in Bintulu, Sarawak which is expected to commence operation by late 2015 or early 2016. |
ABX Express to cater to Sarawak's growing courier demand ... Posted: 28 Mar 2014 10:23 AM PDT by Jonathan Wong, jonathanwong@theborneopost.com. Posted on March 29, 2014, Saturday KUCHING: ABX Express Sdn Bhd (ABX) is well on its way to boost its productivity and quality in Sarawak and Sabah, encouraged by its 32 per cent shareholdings from East Malaysia. Roland Mason, area manager for Sarawak noted in an exclusive interview with The Borneo Post said ABX's continuous improvement in productivity and quality as well as its commitment to staying at the leading edge of technology reflects the company's focus on its customers. He explained that to support and enhance ABX's service further, it recently embarked on the development and upgrading of ICT internally and to date are the propriety owners of the SmartShip and SmarTrak systems. "We are the first and only local courier company to invest in the state of the art mobile scanners," Roland enthused. "The extensive use of ICT has also helped to enhance the partnership with the customers through greater efficiency and productivity, ensuring 'cost-effective quality solutions'." Overwhelming demand and also a need to provide total logistics solution encouraged ABX to diversify its business into warehousing, distribution and trucking, Mason added. "The company's wholly owned subsidiary, UTS Logistics Sdn Bhd, the market leader in Sabah, deals with door to door trucking and distribution services with more than 60 trucks and 20 service centers. "ABX Ground was formed to handled these services in Sarawak. "The majority of ABX's business comes from the financial institutions, where speed and real time tracking systems is imperative. "ABX have involved in the collections and deliveries of cheque books, cheques, financial instruments, trade papers, high security financial papers and distribution of the inward returned cheques. "The shipments involved are high risk, where monitoring and security is a major concern," noted the area manager. The company who started its Malaysia and Brunei operations nearly 30 years ago in Labuan and has since grown to match the services of the four big international players. "We strive for cost effective service and convenience, dispatching important business correspondence and dutiable packages within Malaysia and the world," he added. The company also deals with domestic express, international express pack, small parcel express, air freight, cards and bulk distribution, local delivery, SPICK and same day services. "I foresee huge growth in this sector with so many investments coming into the state via the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy project and feel that the logistics industry in Sarawak is only scratching the tip of the iceberg. With an industry that is valued at RM1.9 billion and rising, we barely scratched it. The potential is enormous." |
Sarawak's right to deny entry, says Deputy Home Minister ... Posted: 28 Mar 2014 12:36 PM PDT KUCHING: The right to deny entry to anyone from coming into the state is in accordance with the 18-Points Agreement signed in 1963, which stays valid until today and should be respected by everyone. Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said under the agreement, state leaders have the right to bar whomsoever they think would create chaos and disharmony among the people. "We cannot run away from the 18-Points Agreement and it should be respected by everyone. It should not be questioned," he said. He told reporters this after presenting Prisons Department Excellent Service Award 2013 (APC 2013) to 77 prisons officers, personnel and civilian staff at the State Prisons headquarters in Jalan Puncak Borneo near here yesterday. Wan Junaidi, a lawyer by profession, said this when asked to comment on the statement by the three Bars of Malaysia – Advocates' Association of Sarawak (AAS), Sabah Law Association (SLA) and the Malaysian Bar – which called on the state government to reconsider the entry bans that it has imposed on some Peninsular-based opposition leaders from entering Sarawak. He defended Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem by saying that the state leaders have every right to ban anyone from entering Sarawak if it felt that they have the potential to create trouble in a peaceful and harmonious Sarawak. "We are peace-loving people and we should not allow (entry to) elements that will disrupt the unity that we have been preserving all these while," he said. The three Bars of Malaysia on Thursday expressed their deep concern in relation to the state government's move to deny opposition politicians entry into the state due to the Balingian by-election on March 29 (today). Among the latest opposition figures barred from the state was Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Women chief and Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin. |
