Students to Stay in Hostel to Tackle Truancy Issue in Public Schools

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Ministry of Education (MoE) is placing pupils from several primary schools that have recorded attendance at the school at an unsatisfactory level at hostels. The step is taken following the unsatisfactory achievement of the pupils concerned in the Penilaian Sijil Rendah (PSR) or Lower Certificate of Assessment for reasons that remained classified as of now, ©BRUDIRECT.COM reported.

This was stated by the Minister of Education, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong in an interview during his visit to two Primary Schools in the Brunei-Muara District in the morning.

Yang Berhormat Pehin said that at first the Ministry identified only seventy two pupils, but after a meeting, it has now found that ninety six pupils with the consent of their parents will be placed in hostels. For such a purpose, the Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota College Hostel is used, and that the students had already begun taking their place at the hostel last Sunday.

The students will attend Year Six Classes as well as additional classes in the afternoon and night. Having them placed at the hostel will help them improve their academic performance as it is understood that their household situation would not enable them to concentrate on their schoolwork at home. The Minister added that with the cooperation of all parties, the ministry would be able to achieve its objective to improve the students' performance and its plan to create exemplary schools whereby nine more schools will be assessed from the coming PSR Examination results.

Yang Berhormat Pehin then clarified on three main approaches made by the Ministry of Education towards elevating the pupils' achievement in this year's PSR. The first approach involves the pupil's attendance at school, as a number of pupils, particularly PSR pupils, could not attend school for some specific reasons.

For this reason, the ministry has held discussions with the parents of the pupils identified last week and explained to them why it is important for their children to go to school and the actions that can be taken based on the compulsory education system. The second approach emphasizes on the teaching and learning quality while the third focuses on leadership.

Last year, twenty four government schools were in the category with PSR performance level below seventy five per cent. In the effort to improve the situation, fifteen Mathematic teachers from several secondary schools were placed at fifteen schools to assist existing teachers there and to identify their learning problems and to take action to help the students concerned.

Also joining the visit was the Deputy Minister of Education, Dato Seri Setia Hj Awg Yusoff Hj Ismail. ©BRUDIRECT.COM
