KUCHING: The stage is set as football fans nation-wide switch their focus to the Malaysia Cup after the Super League drew its curtains in June and the World Cup in July.

There is an air of confidence as Sarawak vie for the nation's most coveted trophy against 15 other teams.

They play their first match at home in the Stadium Negeri against Terengganu tonight.

The Crocs and the Turtles recorded away wins against each other in this season's Super League.

Sarawak head coach Robert Alberts is hoping to use that experience to his benefit in this clash.

"We may know how they play but they know how we play as well. We will do everything we can to not see a repeat of their victory in front of our own fans like the one last April," he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

All the news in recent weeks have been about the impending absence of foreign imports Muamer Salibasic and Hassan El Mohammed.

A key question now is who Sarawak turns to to be the match winner?

Asked about Akmal Rizal Ahmad Rakhli, Alberts sounded optimistic.

"Akmal has been responding well during training and he really wants to show the fans there is a reason why they should cheer for him. He knows what he should do now and he is always ready," he said.

Captain Joseph Kalang Tie has shown good form lately especially during the recent training tour in Indonesia. The midfield and defence departments are showing a clean bill of health.

Sarawak is pitted in Group B for the tournament with Terengganu, Perak and Kedah.

The Sarawak versus Terengganu match will kick off at 8.45pm.

CHMS No. 1 sweep Kuching Under-15 titles

Posted: 13 Aug 2014 09:49 AM PDT

KUCHING: Chung Hua Middle School (CHMS) No. 1 Kuching achieved more success when their boys and girls teams emerged victorious in the Kuching Division U15 Travilion Cup basketball championship last Sunday.

Its A team won all their five league matches to collect 10 points to top the table standings and qualify for the final where they overwhelmed SMK Batu Kawa 94-67.

CHMS No. 1 A opened their campaign by beating CHMS No. 1 B 53-35, and followed up with wins over Incredible 86-38, Lodge School 81-24, SMK Batu Kawa 98-69 and SMK Kuching High 96-62.

In the girls final, CHMS No. 1 overcame a slow start to beat SMK Batu Kawa 58-38 for the double victory.

This was the second time the school had made a clean sweep of the titles after winning the boys and girls titles at Summer Mall Cup Youth U17 basketball championship in April this year.

Apart from emerging champions, 11 boys and 10 girls from CHMS No.1 have been selected to represent Kuching in the Inter-Division U15 Basketball Championship to be held either in Sri Aman or Kuching starting on Sept 13.

Head coach Lee Chee Beng was pleased with the performance of both the boys and girls teams, saying that they had achieved their target of winning both titles.

"Basically, about half of the players in the boys team in this championship had played in the Summer Mall Cup and they had gained much valuable playing experience to meet the challenge in the U15 competition," he said.

"We fielded two teams and the A team was stronger and performed better whereas it was exposure for B team. As for the girls, we had invited three primary six players from SJK Stampin to play for us as they will join us after completing their primary school education."

"We have basketball clubs in the school and the players all undergo systematic training with guidance from the teachers and coaches and sometimes we do invite coaches from outside to help us," added Lee.

CHMS No. 1 will next be preparing for two upcoming tournaments which are the MSSM U17 Inter-School Basketball Championship next month and the Batu Kawa Invitational U16, U14 Basketball Championship in October.

Within these two years, the school had produced a string of impressive achievements.

This include winning the MSSM Kuching Inter-School U15 Boys title last year, 2013 Kuching Open U17 boys title, 2013 Batu Kawa Invitational Inter-School U16 and U14 boys titles.

As for the girls, they were the champions of the 2013 Kuching Open (U15), 2014 Swinburne University Invitational and the 2014 MSSM Kuching (U18).

Mayor’s Cup to attract more non-bumiputra players

Posted: 13 Aug 2014 09:48 AM PDT

KUCHING: The Kuching City South Council (MBKS) is organising the Mayor's Cup aimed at attracting more non-Bumiputera football players at the end of this month.

The tournament is held in conjunction with the current Kuching Festival.

This was announced by MBKS Mayor Datuk James Chan at a press conference yesterday.

"As a non-Bumiputera myself I know that football is still only popular among the Bumiputera community here in Kuching or even Sarawak. I hope this tournament will somewhat help change that fact at least a little bit," he told reporters at the MBKS building.

Tournament chairman Irwan Zulkarnain Hasbie said each team must field at least three non-Bumiputera players either among the reserves or starting line-up.

The tournament will have three categories – namely the Boys Under-16, Men's Open and Men's Veteran.

Both men's competition will feature 20-minute matches while matches for the boys event will be 40 minutes.

A total of 16 teams representing various public service departments will compete in the Men's Open and Men's Veteran.

Eight school team will vie for the Boys Under-16 title.

The tournament will kick off on Aug 30 and all matches will be played at the Jubilee Ground.

The closing ceremony will be officiated by the mayor on Sep 7.

Rashid remains in BAM fold to oversee ‘unfinished business’

Posted: 13 Aug 2014 09:47 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Embattled national singles head coach Rashid Sidek has no intention of quitting the post, at least for now, despite coming under heavy criticism for the failure of the men's singles players in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Despite media reports that Rashid had quit his post as the national men's singles head coach, the former international said there was much work to be done, especially with two major competitions around the corner.

Rashid said he wants to focus on preparations for the BWF World Championships in Denmark later this month and the Incheon Asian Games in South Korea next month.

"I will continue my duties and remain in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) fold. There is a lot of work to be done…especially assisting the players to prepare for the World Championships and the Asian Games.

"As a professional I will continue my duties with full commitment. The commitment of the players and their relationship with the coaches is also good. We need to polish the skills of the players and prepare them mentally," he said when met at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara yesterday.

Rashid said he had already replied to a show cause letter from the BAM for his alleged statement to the media that he would withdraw from being the team leader for the badminton squad during the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

He was also not sure whether he would be in the team for the World Championships and Asian Games because a decision has yet to be made by the BAM. — Bernama

Sarawak’s Corbusier flies high in KK Open

Posted: 13 Aug 2014 09:46 AM PDT

KUCHING: Sarawak's Team Corbusier kicked off the second half of the cycling season with a flourish in the Kota Kinabalu Open on Sunday.

Racing in the 'Land Below the Wind', Corbusier's Kalimantan pro Fito Prilanji won the men's road race while top Sarawak junior Gary Tay reeled in the junior mountainbike road event.

They topped off a superb Sunday with all five senior riders finishing in the top ten.

Sabah, home town of team leader Lauel Lauridsen Adrian, is becoming a gold mine for Corbusier with their first UCI race win and leader's jersey coming in the first stage of the 2013 Tour of Borneo.

Another Kuching team, Sonamu, also had a good harvest when they won the men's mountainbike road event and took second spot in the junior event.

Nicholas Minol won the 75km race in 1hr 56mins 49sec with teammate Andre Pausek fifth 4mins 28secs behind.

Sonamu's old warhorse M. Azhar Bujang fought off cramps to finish seventh.

Their rising junior Wan Haikal W. Zainal found Tay, the Sukma mountainbike bronze medallist, too much to handle and finished second.

Tay won the 50km race in 1hr 20mins 2secs with Haikal one second back.

Corbusier coach Shaiful Helmi was not surprised to see Tay win.

"I kind of expected Garry to win as he is so strong in the junior category. He was actually under-geared with a 39 chainring compared to Haikal's 42.

"I wanted him to change it but he convinced me he could do it. I trust him," said Shaiful.

The blue ribbon 92.2km road race saw 18 of the 80 starters failing to finish the tough hilly journey with Fito outsprinting Team Brunei's Mohd. Luqman. Both riders were credited with 2hrs 31mins 43secs to average 43.665kph.

Laurel took the remaining podium spot when he finished 1min 14secs behind.

Yudhi Rachmad was sixth, behind Brunei's sole Glasgow Commonwealth Games athlete M. Immadi Aziz.

The Harun siblings Afiq and Zahin were seventh and eight respectively, a credible result in their first major road race.

Shaiful was surprised at their strong performance despite not having an ideal week-long training camp prior to the race.

"It was not the best situation since Hari Raya just finished with all the lemang and rendang mixed in."

"I knew we could make the podium but I never expected all of them to be in the top 10 knowing that the Brunei team were better in terms of strength and chances," said Shaiful.

"I definitely wanted Laurel to win in his hometown race but I also realised that he was a prime target. Brunei riders knew Laurel's strength so I told Laurel he can go for the win but don't jeopardise the team's chances. He understands this well."

In the race, Fito and Laurel broke away with two Bruneians.

With 15km left, Fito took off with Luqman and had enough left to beat the Brunei rider at the line.

"I knew they were watching me so I told Fito to go for it," said Laurel.

"It was disappointing to not win but that's how it is sometimes. We need to sacrifice to get the win. It is my duty to see that the team wins."

"Overall, I am happy as we won and I also made the podium plus we were all in the top 10," said the UiTM sports science major.
